Beginner Oud Course

A complete foundation in the Oud. Over eight weeks you'll go from holding the instrument for the first time to playing your first melodies and improvisations.

What you'll learn

1

Tuning

Tune your Oud accurately by ear and with a tuner. Understand string names, intervals, and how to keep your instrument stable.

2

Posture

Sit, hold, and balance the Oud correctly so you can play for hours without strain or fatigue.

3

Using the Pick (Risha)

Hold the risha properly and develop clean, even down- and up-strokes with a warm, controlled tone.

4

Learn the Fingerboard

Map the Oud's fretless neck — find every note confidently across all strings and positions.

5

Basic Techniques

Build essential left-hand technique: clean fingering, smooth shifting, and your first ornaments.

6

Improvisation

Take your first steps into taqsim — free improvisation within a maqam, the heart of Arabic music.

7

Note Reading

Read Arabic music notation and standard staff notation so you can learn pieces independently.

8

Styles & Scales Overview

A guided tour of the major maqamat and the regional styles that bring them to life.
